Seattle’s Sir Mix-A-Lot had already been a gold- and platinum-selling rap artist when Rick Rubin picked him up for his Warner-distributed Def American Recordings in 1991. “Baby Got Back,” the second single from the resultant album Mack Daddy, shot to the top of the Billboard pop singles chart. The now-iconic video played for just six weeks on MTV before the network yanked it off after complaints from conservative groups.
