“Egypt, Egypt” • Egyptian Lover • Freak Beat/Macola Records • 1984

When Los Angeles DJ/MC Greg “Egyptian Lover” Broussard wanted to make his first record, he went to a small vinyl plant on Santa Monica Boulevard that offered custom pressing deals. And when Broussard kept coming back to Macola for more vinyl, Macola owner Don Macmillan made Broussard a fateful deal: free pressing in return for the right to distribute “Egypt, Egypt” nationally. It became the first of many rap records for Macola, which would go on to launch the rap careers of almost every West Coast rap artist in the 1980s.
