"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."
While Lord Acton’s famous quote was actual referencing papal infallibility, I believe it perfectly encapsulates the American Government and it’s leaders. You would be hard pressed to find any other country in recorded history that is as hypocritical as the United States of America. This is a country that was “founded” by a group of people looking for freedom from tyranny, yet the first thing they do is tyrannize and slaughter the indigenous people. Then they kidnap and enslave another group of people all the while professing that every man should be free to pursue life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. If ever there was a nation full of disingenuous, two-faced, lying, homicidal, inhuman bastards, we are it.
My problem with this country is similar to the one I have with major religions, they promise you heaven on earth as long as you are a member of the club. You want complete freedom to live where you want, worship as you like, marry whomever you choose, participate in all branches of government and have a guarantee to a fair trial? Fine….as long as you are a white, anglo-saxon protestant. You want eternal bliss after you die? Fine…as long as you give up red meat on Sundays, pork every other day, take communion, recite your catechisms on cue, swear on one of the 100+ editions of any of the 5+ versions of the holy bible that you will sign over 10% of your salary to the Holy-sanctified-apostle-of-faith-give-up-all-logic-mother-church and praise the name of a philosopher from 2000 years ago who was born of a virgin and never had sex in his entire life (even though you can’t account for 10+ years of his life) and liked to hang out with the guys all the time….but wasn’t gay.
This country has built itself on the subjugation and enforced misery of large groups of people to satisfy the wants and needs of a very small group of people. Most countries are run this way, but at least they have the decency to say they are a dictatorship or monarchy instead of masquerading as a democracy. The whole “We the people” bit sounds good on paper, but if you actually believe it works I have swampland in Florida and a bridge in Brooklyn that I can let you have at a great discount.
There was a small time frame in American history when people were actually pissed off enough about the status quo to actually make some changes, that was the 60’s and unfortunately those times have changed. Americans have become too lazy and apathetic to institute real change. Oh sure we may get riled up on the hot topic of the day, but to actually get up off our widening asses to do something about it…not going to happen. Not unless it directly effects our household and probably not even then. We allowed ourselves to be seduced by the dark side; material comforts and convenience. We were so taken with the thought of having everything we wanted at our fingertips we didn’t realize that we would have to work so hard to afford it that we gave up our lives to obtain it and now can’t really appreciate it. We are now like those little human battery cells from The Matrix, satisfied to be hooked up to an IV and fed our lives through the media instead of breaking away from the system and using the truth to affect changes in the system.
As terrible as 9-11 was, I never thought it would be a wake up call. I knew we were too far gone for that. I knew the outrage over Katrina would dissipate, hey it was mostly poor people and black people that suffered. The folks with money got out of town before the storm hit. No, it will take a catastrophe of global proportions to wake us from our twinkie-induced stupor. Something along the lines of a stock market crash so tremendous that it would make 1929 look like an off day on the trading floor. Or a global warming-induced weather disaster that would wipe out some of the more densely populated areas, like half of the New England states.
Danny, I agree with you that hip-hop created a generation of people that were more accepting of other beliefs and cultures and more willing to celebrate diversity. As a black woman with Choctaw, Cherokee, Scottish and Irish ancestors, no one is more pleased than I that my daughter will not be subjected to the level of racism that I experienced as a child. However, acceptance is not enough. Action is needed on every level to make sure that we don’t revert back to the way things used to be and make the changes that will ensure our children’s future. We need to start grooming the next generation of hip-hop now, so that there can be a real revolution, not necessarily violent, just one that institutes great changes. Because if there is going to be a major catastrophe (more like when), not only would I want the original hip-hop ideals to be used as a guideline for shaping the new society but I would want the people who grew up living that ideology to lead the way.
