Hooray for Kanye

So he's a bit of a whiner. A tad full of himself, maybe? Crying, as they say, with two loaves of bread under his arm?

Who cares. As of today, this kid is officially my hero.

Last week, he steps out on that shakiest of limbs in hip-hop to stand against homophobes.

Then, two days ago, he releases an album that is an unabashed personal statement in a genre that has increasingly become a paint-by-the-numbers affair.

And last night he basically told Bush to go fuck himself on network TV. Emotional, inarticulate, blathering, unscripted... perfect.

Contrary to what my good friends have said (and now retracted), I'm glad this guy has a mic in his hand.

Man, Kanye is the truth!!!
I loved his album, but hated his public persona until I read this... This kid makes you "feel" something, whether it be love or hate, and that is rare nowadays. He has more heart in his pinky than 99% of the so called "gangsta" rappers, and even your friendly neighborhood politician (gangsta rappers & politicians are one & the same to me). He is actually standing for something that he believes in in an era where people don't even believe in themselves. Now I have to go buy that album.

Predictions anyone?...anyone?...anyone?

my predictions:
1. we will be reminded of K.West's statement in December 2005 during the holidays here in Houston.
2. Anti-war people will jump on board with hip hop in October during election season.
3. September will become Black Agenda month for people who talk, write and blog about race.

Is this hip hop's Vietnam/Civil Rights moment?

Yep.

I'm glad he has a mic in his hand too! He's the new breed of hip hop activist. Let's take it back to what it's all about. I bet Master P, Juvy and the rest (Mannie, Baby, Lil Wayne etc) will have something more to rap about now. Sad but true.

I just wish he was a better rapper. If he's gonna be the only guy up on that level that is making political rhymes (Mosh seems to have been a blip) it's a shame he can't learn to be less corny on the mic.

If Hov had Kanye's new political backbone, music would be a proper force in America right now.
