Music Dorks Rule
I didn’t know how much of a dork I was until I realized that Jeff Chang was, duh, passing this set of questions onto me.
Total volume of music files on my computer: According to iTunes, I’ve got 24.24 GB of music, 4117 songs. This pales in comparison to the Great Library of Chang, But then again, my laptop’s hard drive is only 75 GB. And I like my files on the bigger side, all AAC, baby. This figure does not include, of course, the 21 GB of Digital Perfomer multitrack files on the extra drive.
Last CD I bought was... T.A.C.T. All Stars at KremBo Records in Tel Aviv. This is the crew of rapper Subliminal; the first real Israeli hip-hop juggernaut. Subliminal and his Israeli-Arab protégé Tamer were the subject of a recent documentary; the disintegration of their relationship likened to a Middle East version of the feud between Biggie and Tupac. Decent production and guest spots from Wu Tang’s Remedy and Killah Priest and Tragedy Khadafi.
Song playing right now: The sound of the 1/9 train outside my 3rd floor window; the crack of Derek Jeter’s bat on the TV.
Five songs I listen to a lot these days: “Hey Yoya” by Momy Levy and Michael Winslow, a remake of the song by Kaveret (the “Beatles” of Israel); “All Blues,” Miles; “Down and Out,” Cam; “Straight Outta Compton” send-up by Veruca Salt’s Nina Gordon; “Even If She Is,” from Q-Tip’s unreleased Kamal The Abstract.
And now I throw it to y’all:

to coin a phrase, "last night, an internet radio D.J. saved my life"...
1. Live365.com/SoulsVilleonline.com
2. KCRW.com/Chocolate City w/Garth Trinidad, Saturdays 6-9pm pst
3.Handzonradio.fm - House Music all night long, say what?! House Music all night long!
4. Deep House Page.com
5. iTunes and Rhaposdy have limited use for me...not enough back catalog licensed; record companies still sleepin' at the wheel.
6. Last CD i bought was..."Afro Cubano Chant", a U.K. latin jazz compliation featuring: Gato Barbieri, Steve Berrios, Andy Gonzalez, Bob James, Mike Mainieri, and Lenny White
7. Song Playing right now: "Too High" - Stevie Wonder
8. Why do record companies treat freelancers like "what-have-you-done-for-me-lately's?...gettin' promotional product in the mail saved a workin' man like me a lot of coin, but seein' how i'm not crankin' out reviews on the regular, the product has slowed to a trickle...sigh!...Dan, i know with your pedigree, you can speak a word and my mailbox will be whole again...can you hook a brother up?? lol
9. Artists to keep me company on a desert island: James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind and Fire, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Jill Scott, Mongo Santamaria, Cal Tjader, Tito Puente and any compliation by Masters at Work...
oops!...how can i forget George Clinton, Bootsy and the rest of the P-Funk family????
and Chic, Luther, Eric B.and Rakim, KRS-One, Marley, Banton, Issac Hayes, "The Theme from Shaft"...
six million ways to die...can't choose one. :)
Dan, can you handle my truth?
Total volume of music files on my computer: G-d only knows. I've got music files on CDs, music files on DVDs, music files on three computers. They're probably reproducing and mutating in there. But I'm confident Dan's are more plentiful and better organized.
Last CD I bought was... Kraftwerk's 2004 live album, "Minimum/Maximum."
Song playing right now (in my head): The Cache Valley Drifters, "White Room" (bluegrass cover of the Cream tune).
Five songs I listen to a lot these days (or that are currently repeating in my head or that I would like to listen to if I hadn't just misplaced the CD or MP3): James Taylor Quartet, "Chalkpit"; Kraftwerk, "Dentaku" (Pocket Calculator) recorded 2004 in Japan; Funkadelic, "One Nation Under A Groove"; Brothers Johnson, "Strawberry Letter 23" (wouldn't it'd be a hoot to have the intro to "Ride-O-Rocket" play whenever you enter a room?); Boogie Down Productions, "South Bronx" (in honor of Dan's journalistic endeavors).
See my comments here re: participating in these so-called "blog memes."
someday soon i shall do this!
